Kenya’s two-time World Championship bronze medalist, Agnes Tirop, is dead.
The 25-year-old long-distance runner, a representative of Kenya at the Tokyo Olympics, found dead in her house
in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County on Wednesday, October 13.
However, Chairperson of Athletics Kenya in the Nairobi Region, Barnaba Korir, who confirmed the tragic news, said she had stab wounds in the abdomen, Barnaba Korir.
Athletics Kenya said in a statement on Twitter: “Tirop was found dead at their home in Iten after she was allegedly stabbed by her husband. We are still working to unearth more details surrounding her demise,”.
“Kenya has lost a jewel who was one of the fastest-rising athletics giants on the international stage, thanks to her eye-catching performances on the track.”
Furthermore, suspicion arises saying her ex-lover is behind the killing.
In the Tokyo Olympic Games, Tirop emerged fourth in the 5,000m women’s finals after clocking 14:39.62.
Tirop was also the 2019 World 5,000m bronze medalist. She also won the 2015 senior Cross Country Championships honors.
Agnes Tirop smashed the 10km World record on September 12, 2021. She clocked 30:01 to shave 28 seconds from the previous women-only 10km road record held by Asmae Leghzaoui of Morrocco from 2002.
