The Lokoja fire incident happened at the Felele area of the city
Not fewer than 23 persons have lost their lives in a ghastly petroleum tanker accident in the early hour of Wednesday.
Broom News gathered from an eye witness that the tanker loaded with fuel fell then engulfed with fire spreading to other vehicles within its range.
A primary school pupil and students reported to be among the dead.
Also, a businessman identified simply as Pastor Samson lost his life in the inferno. He died along with his wife and three children, who until his death was a member of Baptist Church, Felele.
Lokoja police spokesman Willy Aya said that several victims burnt beyond recognition.
Footage of the aftermath shared on social media shows a huge plume of black smoke rising into the air at the site of the crash.
In June, a similar incident happened in the country’s biggest city, Lagos, after two petrol tankers collided. The fire then spread to another tanker carrying natural gas.
According to reports, the cause of the incident is the tanker driver’s failure to gain control after a brake malfunction. As a result, the truck rammed into a tricycle and oncoming vehicles.
This is sad and preventable
