Social media giant, Facebook has changed its name to Meta.
The founder and CEO of the company, Mark Zuckerberg announced the name change on
Thursday, 28th October 2021 at Facebook’s annual AR/VR conference.
According to Him, the parent company’s name is being changed to “Meta” to represent the company’s ambitions for a future beyond social media.
The re-branding also comes as a timely public relations remedy following news reports over the past months of the company’s shady business practices
Facebook, now known as Meta,is described as a futuristic plan and vision to create a digital world,
for working and playing in a virtual world using VR headsets.
Mark related that the “metaverse” is an online world where people can game, feel they are with one another and have a “sense of presence” despite being far apart.
He said the Facebook could not “possibly represent everything that we’re doing today, let alone in the future”
Hence, the need to change.
Mark sees the unification of disparate digital worlds into something called the ‘Metaverse’ as the next digital frontier
He unveiled the new company logo of Meta that encompass Facebook, as well as apps such as Instagram, WhatsApp and the virtual reality brand Oculus.
Zuckerberg said he expects the metaverse to reach a billion people within the next decade.
