German Chancellor, Angela Merkel explains to Chimamanda Adichie why Siemens electricity deal with Nigeria is yet to take off after.
However, speaking at an event in Germany, Adichie notes the announcement that the Nigerian government in 2019
had signed a memorandum of understanding with Siemens and it had the full backing of Chancellor Merkel.
The celebrity novelist also points out that Siemens’ “miraculous works” in various countries were listed at
the time and it was said that Nigeria’s power will be growing in stages.
According to Adichie, two years after, the fixation electricity issue which is the bane of Nigeria’s problem is pending.
Responding to this, Chancellor Merkel outlined some of the reasons. The German leader stated that part of the issue
had to do with funding and they are being careful as they’ve made the mistake of not questioning
the finance of a project in the past.
She also revealed that the demand for too much local content by the country where the investment is going to
affects the project. According to her, agreeing to such might lead to recording a failure in regards to solar panels
or gas power plants, and the investor will go back to zero.
Merkel noted that there is no industrial base in the country to demand 40-50% local content for such a project.
Speaking about where the project’s suppose site is, Chimamanda Adichie answered by saying that the agreement
is that megawatts will be growing in stages, not disclosing the location.
Merkel then interjected by saying she will get back to the novelist.
