MOSCOW, BM, ($1=) – The Malakhit Marine Engineering Bureau has designed the multi-purpose small nuclear submarine Gorgona, according to the company’s annual report for 2020, learned BulgarianMilitary.com
Earlier, Malachite developed a small submarine from project # 865 Piranha. A total of two submarines of this type were
built. In 1999, they were withdrawn from the Navy. However, according to the United Shipbuilding Corporation, the submarine
was capable of accommodating up to six combat swimmers and was intended for “landing and returning combat
swimmers, patrolling the shore in shallow waters, combating ships and single surface ships, laying minefields and
The design bureau also developed a modified version of the submarine – “Piranha-T”, in which, in particular, the
number of weapons was increased fivefold. Later, Malachite presented the project for small submarines P-550. The
length compared to the “Piranhas” increased by one and a half times – from 30 to 45 meters, the maximum depth of
immersion also increases from 200 to 300 meters. The boat was capable of carrying missile weapons.
There is also a report on the development of a Poseidon nuclear-unmanned vehicle. It is currently undergoing test. The
Belgorod nuclear submarine must become its carrier.
Russia is building a naval base for Poseidon UUV
According to Russian military experts, Russia is currently building a naval base for its Poseidon robotic nuclear
submarines. According to preliminary information, the coastal naval base of nuclear submarines should be ready by the
summer of 2022.
Sources from the Russian Ministry of Defense claim that such a base is necessary due to Russian weapons’ specifics.
Rear Admiral Vsevolod Khmirov says it was common to build a floating quay where a Russian ship docked. But this was
during the Soviet era when technology was less advanced, and Moscow did not have such weapons. Now times are
different, weapons are technologically advanced, and a completely different coastal facility is important, says the Russian
The Ministry of Defense plans to make the facility modern and also allow for staff training and a base for launching the
robotic submarine. So far, however, no information has been disclosed as to exactly where the Russian MoD would
build such a facility.
Ghost or reality
German experts believe that the Poseidon nuclear unmanned underwater vehicle is part of Russian leader Vladimir
Putin’s ingenious plan to preserve Russia’s great power status. Most of all, in the West, they fear that the words of the
President of the Russian Federation about “Poseidon” will turn out to be prophetic.
This opinion states in the publication of the German news agency RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland (RND). The author
of the material, Matthias Koch, draws attention to the fact that within the framework of his message to the Federal Assembly, the President of Russia mentioned Poseidon.
However, Vladimir Putin noted that work on a new system of unmanned weapons, which will include the silent delivery of nuclear
charges to their destination, is being put-through, following the development plan of the Russian army.
In conclusion, Western sources in military circles claim that the Poseidon underwater drone will autonomously cross entire oceans and destroy coastal cities, provoking giant waves and emitting radioactive energy.
